# L) Q. b* l% I- ^( P7 O$ f- C

We are on the expressway approaching Badaling Great Wall. The mountain ahead is Yundu Mountain, on which Badaling was built. This expressway is located in 20-mile-long Guangou Valley, which is famous for the important strategic Juyongguan Pass--the building just ahead. It was first built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and has northern and southern gates, outside which is Wengcheng. Ancient Juyongguan Pass was destroyed but in recent years, it has restored its previous splendor. Yuntai was built in 1342, during the Yuan Dynasty; it used to have 3 stone towers, but they were destroyed by an earthquake between the Yuan and Ming Dynasty (circa 1368). Taian Temple was built there but was destroyed by a fire in 1702. The remaining base, the present Yuntai, is the largest remnant tower base in China; it is one of the most important historical relics of China.

The hills on both sides used to be covered with lush pines, which added great beauty to the hills. The location, called “Layers of Pines in Juyong,” was listed as one of the eight famous scenes of Beijing in Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), but a huge fire in 1500, during the Ming Dynasty, totally destroyed the forest. Although great efforts have been made in recent years, the former scenery cannot be adequately restored because of lack of rainfall. I would like to give you some information about the Great Wall to help you better it.
; W) f/ G' r& B3 U: z% jThe Wall has a history of more than 2,500 years. Its construction began in the 7th Century B.C. during the Warring States Period.  Many dukedoms built walls in Central China to protect themselves from each other and from the “barbarians.”  Walls were built by the states of Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, Wei and Qin; these seven dukedoms conquered many other small states and became the seven most powerful in the Warring States Period.” When Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, unified China and established the first centralized feudal empire (221-206 BC), he ordered that these northern sections of the wall be linked together into one defensive bulwark. Emperor Qin Shihuang gave general Meng Tian an army of 300,000 forced laborers and the mission to consolidate the Qin Great Wall from Lintao in Gansu Province in the west to Liaodong in the east./ |1 s* A' U) B" ^8 y4 Q

The Han Great Wall started from Lop Nor in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region to Liaodong in the east--about 10,000 km and became the longest Great Wall in history. The Ming Dynasty was the last in Chinese history to do large-scale construction of the Great Wall; and most of the walls we see today were built in the Ming Dynasty. It is worth mentioning that in history some minority rulers, such as rulers of Beiwei, Beiqi, Beizhou, Dongwei, Jin and so on, also built parts of the Great Wall. Among them, the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) built the longest Great Wall, which stretches for about 2,500 km. So from the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period to Ming Dynasty, more than 20 states or empires built the Great Wall, total of which runs for about 100,000 li, covering 17 provinces, autonomous regions and cities. On the whole, the Great Wall ran for about 100,000 li and has existed for 2000 years. It is roughly calculated that if the bricks and soil used to build the Great Wall was built into a wall 5 m high and 1 m thick, the wall can circle the earth 10 times.5 E3 x0 S, M2 y

7 T  N6 ]  l: }8 F9 c6 ]1 qBadaling Great Wall is the wall built in the Ming Dynasty. Considering its construction and defenses, it can be regarded as an excellent representation of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The Ming Dynasty built such a solid wall at Badaling primarily, because of its location--Badaling not only defends of the Royal Tombs of Ming Dynasty, but also the northwestern gate of the capital. Shortly, we will see an inscription called “ Key to the Northern Gate.” The “Northern Gate” is the gate of Beijing and “key” refers to its strategic importance, i.e., if this gate is well defended, Beijing will be secure. To strengthen its defenses, the Ming Dynasty had a policy to “Heighten the Wall”. So the founder of the empire sent his generals Xuda and Fengsheng to lead their soldiers to construct the wall and sturdy gates. During the 270 years of the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall was constructed and then repaired for 18 times. Finally a Great Wall from Yalu River of Liaoning Province in the east to Jiayuguan Pass of Gansu Province in the west has been built. This is what we have called the 10-thousand-li Great Wall running through 9 provinces, autonomous regions and cities. The architectural level and defensive ability of this wall are incomparable in history. During the Ming Dynasty, rows of walls were built to strengthen the defenses and in certain strategic areas, gates have been built. In Shanxi Province there are 4 rows of the Great Wall with passes and many rows of low walls in some strategic areas. In 1505 during the Ming Dynasty, Badaling was constructed as an enclosed town, called “Guancheng”. Meanwhile, in the strategic passages within the territory of Yanqing County, more than 100 beacon and fire towers were built. At that time, the Anda Tribe from the north invaded southward. In 1515 the Anda Tribe reached Badaling and in the following year, reached Yanqing County, greatly threatening Beijing. Their troops attacked and withdrew too swiftly to be seized.  In 1529 the eastern gate of Badaling Great Wall was rebuilt to strengthen the defenses. In 1551, barracks were built northwest of Badaling to help repel the enemy. In 1568, a heroic general of battles against the invaders was sent to command the Jin, Chang and Bao military towns. He rebuilt a 600 km-long section of the Wall from Shanhaiguan Pass in the east to Juyongguan Pass in the west. In 1582 the western gate of the Great Wall was rebuilt. The Great Wall in Badaling was constructed with high walls and many beacon towers constituting an effective defensive system.% V) C. S9 F7 }# C' O9 _+ {0 t! I; Y, A* |

! p9 Y/ `( [1 z" J    We have reached Badaling Great Wall. Look around, you will find Badaling Great Wall is divided into southern and northern sections, which are wind and stretch out on the mountains like dragons. Look down; there are Wengcheng’s 2 gates and U-shaped walls. On the walls, there are battlements. During the Ming Dynasty, when battles occurred, the Chinese troops used the Great Wall as the base and resisted the enemy.  If the enemy broke through, the soldiers around could enclose and defeat them. Wengcheng is built against the mountain on a strategic point of passage and is an important part of the Great Wall.  In ancient times, troops were always stationed in Chadao Town instead of Wengcheng because it ha no water well.  In Wengcheng, there used to be the “Residence of Chayuan,” to lodge the emperor and the officials when here on inspection. The distance between the two gates of Wengcheng is 63.9 meters. Above the western gate, there is an inscription “ Key to the Northern Gate”.& t0 Z+ t, b7 ~1 F/ C

1 `4 _- \8 ~; |& O$ @In ancient times, there were 2 huge wooden doors; in peacetime, they were kept open and travelers were free to come and go. During wartime, the doors were tightly closed except when counterattacking, thousands of Chinese soldiers or horsemen rushed out through the gate. Above the eastern gate of Wengcheng is the inscription “Outer Town of Juyong”, which was built in 1540. In the Juyong, there used to be a stone tablet that was set up after 1573 during the Ming Dynasty. The inscription recorded that this section of the Great Wall took 80 years to build; the tablet listed the construction dates, length of this section, and the names of the commanders and foremen and identified their respective responsibilities. Standing on the Wall, you could see crowds of travelers and chains of vehicles flowing in and out. In ancient times, Wengcheng was a key military defensive pass. This section stretches to Changping and Beijing in the south, Yanqing in the north, Xuanhua and Zhangjiakou in the northwest. “The road stretches (da) from here to all (eight) directions ”. Hence the name “Badaling”., o; a9 K, ~* e; I

' Y- |! Z, c( F3 wTake a careful look. There is a beacon tower between every section of the Great Wall. The battlement walls are as high as 1.7 to 2 meters to protect the soldiers. And in the ancient battles, usually 3-4 soldiers were at each position and in the other less strategic battlement walls, only 1-2 soldiers. The square openings at the top are look out ports designed to detect the enemy. The larger openings below, 40cm wide and 65cm high, are firing ports used to throw stones or fireballs to repel the enemy. The small one-meter-high wall inside is called the Girl Wall functioning as a parapet. Between the battlement wall and the Girl Wall, there is a slot every few meters, used for drainage. Now we are walking on the top of the Wall, which is wide enough to accommodate five horses or ten people walking side by side. The roadway atop Badaling Great Wall averages 7.8m high. The width at the base is 6.5m-7.5m wide; the top is 4.5m wide. Look down and you will see that the body of the wall is made with solid marble blocks; the cracks of between the blocks are filled with lime mortar. The inside of the wall body is filled with packed earth and stones. The top of the wall is laid with 3-4 square bricks; the cracks here are also filled with lime mortar. Thus, the body of the wall is solid enough to resist any storms or wind as well as enemy soldiers.

This beacon tower is a very important part of the Great Wall.  It is built against the outer side of the Wall. It consists top, middle and bottom. The bottom is for housing soldiers and storage of food and ammunition; the top is for observation, enemy detection and shooting. This hollow tower designed by Qi Jiguang strengthened the defensive ability of the Great Wall. Its design is quite creative. Let’s go up and have a look. It looks like present-day blockhouses. At the bottom, there is a “Juan Door,” for access to the top of the wall. It is the passage ancient soldiers used to go up and down the wall. 5 j& R- |' s6 V" v$ b
Because the Great Wall was an integrated military defensive system, it not only had defensive works, such as the enclosed towns (Guancheng, Wengcheng, etc) and the wall itself, but also beacon towers, also called Feng Sui, used to pass military information. In the daytime, the signals were with smoke, Sui; at night, with fire, called Feng. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)), cannons were also used as signals. The rules to send Feng Sui varied from dynasty to dynasty. The Ming rule was that if the number of the enemy was 100 to 200, the soldiers would light one fire (feng) and fire one cannon. If the number reached more than 10,000, they would light 5 fires and fire 5 cannon rounds. By this means, military information from a thousand km away could reach Beijing within two hours. The beacon towers have a longer history than the Great Wall. There is an ancient story involving an emperor at the end of the Western Zhou period (circa 771 BC) who used beacon towers to deceived his lords just to amuse his favorite concubine Baosi; because of this, when a true emergency arose and the signal fires on the beacon towers were lit, the lords did not come to the emperor’s aid because they thought it was another “joke.” Now look at the Third Northern and Southern Beacon Towers, you will see they are built with the bricks and stones.

* f: y8 v: K# s7 m9 ~  d0 p6 P9 q% q' E" @
The Great Wall was the greatest manmade military defense structure in ancient China. Its construction started during Ancient Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring Stated Period (770-221 B.C.) At that time, walls were built by some warring states to protect their own territories. In 221 B.C., Qin Shihuang, who became the first emperor of a unified China, linked the separate walls into a “ten-thousand-li wall” to defend against invaders from the North. From then on, the Great Wall was continuously extended and repaired by following dynasties. Most of wall has deteriorated badly; at present, the best preserved is the wall built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)).2 i2 m3 P9 I7 z+ |* m

Black Bear: Carnivore species
' c) E! I( R0 W" G# {8 N8 ?; w. J- g* m: [: c0 _3 e! ~
Black bears live in the northeast, northwest, southwest and mid-south in China. They usually dwell in the forests and shrub woods. In summer, they stay in higher altitudes; in winter they choose lower altitudes. Black bears like to live alone and move about at night. They are good climbers and swimmers. They have highly developed sense of hearing and smell, but poor sight. So they are called “blind bears”.. ]6 n( c2 O4 e

4 {1 U2 R8 ^) F* A!

INTRODUCTION TO THE GREAT WALL AT BADALING

7 {) b. p' j6 c9 O3 t7 JThe Great Wall was the greatest manmade military defense structure in ancient China. Most of wall has deteriorated badly; at present, the best preserved is the wall built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)).

. i! m8 z0 N5 Z; M9 C8 [The Ming Dynasty Wall stretches from the Yalu River in Liaoning Province in the east to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province in the west, a length of more than 6,000 kilometers. It runs through 5 provinces, 2 autonomous regions and 2 municipalities in the Northern China.

' G6 v! C8 k6 _$ F# \The Great Wall at Badaling is the best representative section of the Great Wall. It is more than 7 meters high and 5 meters wide. It was the strategic point of Juyongguan Pass in ancient times. Many other fortresses and beacon towers were constructed at the strategic points.

7 @" F, Y8 z  F2 ]) n6 WThis section of the Great Wall has drawn great attention from the Chinese government since the foundation of P. R. China. It was designated a major historical site under state protection in 1961. The Great Wall was listed as “a World Cultural Heritage” by the UNESCO in 1987.
